Health news: Medicines - EU law could hit drug development

Children might not get the drugs they need under European Union laws designed to encourage the development of child-specific medicines.

From next week, any company applying to produce a new medicine or extendthe licence for an existing one must demonstrate that the drug can alsobe used for children, unless they can show there is no demand forit.

Manufacturers developing medicines specifically for children will haveto conduct trials with them before their applications are cleared. Toencourage companies to develop children's medicines, firms will getmarket exclusivity for six months, or two years for rarer medicines.

A paediatric committee of experts will be established by the EU in Julyto vet companies' plans and to ensure a focus is placed on developingmedicines that children most need.

Professor Imtiaz Choonara, professor in child health at the Universityof Nottingham, said there was "tremendous potential" to develop newmedicines.
