Health News: Transitional care - Nurses vote to develop standards

Nurses at the Royal College of Nursing's annual congress last week voted to develop detailed standards to tackle problems in transferring young people from child to adult care.

Mervyn Townley, chair of the college's children and young people'smental health forum, said existing guidance is geared towardsdoctors.

The standards will cover a range of nursing settings and include basiccommunication skills and an understanding of problems young people faceduring transition, he said.

The college is also likely to push for improving training abouttransition on pre- and post-registration nursing courses.
