Instead, declines in teenage pregnancy rates in the US are largely theresult of increased use of contraceptives.
Sexual health groups in the UK say the findings back up the Government'steenage pregnancy strategy. Gill Frances, chair of the IndependentAdvisory Group on Teenage Pregnancy, said: "This confirms we are on theright track because providing young people with good information, adviceand contraceptive services is the way to reduce teenage pregnancy. It isa myth that teaching abstinence is a better approach."
The report concluded that 86 per cent of the 27 per cent decline in USteenage pregnancy rates between 1991 and 2000 was due to greater use ofcontraceptives. The remaining 14 per cent of the fall was due to sexualabstinence.
