Health News: Sexual health - Nurse should text in code to teens

Nurses should use coded messages on sensitive issues such as pill reminders for under-16s, according to the first guidance by the Royal College of Nursing on texting services.

The guidance marks the growing use of phone texting to give advice onhealth, bullying and emotional and sexual health concerns for youngpeople by school nurses.

It highlights confidentiality as one of a range of issues nurses shouldconsider when setting up a texting service.

Mobile phones used for such services should have a password only knownto the nurse responsible for it, it adds, while verbal contact shouldnever be made using the number without first texting the young personfor their consent.
