The move follows the launch of the foundation's report on self-harm,which estimated that 800,000 young people deliberately hurt themselveseach year (Children Now, 29 March-4 April 2006).
Professionals who undertake the course, which is being developed byYoungMinds, will be able to put together a local protocol on self-harm,according to the charity's consultancy and training manager Lee Miller."There's very little out there on this at the moment - bits and piecesby different agencies. So we're pulling all this together," saidMiller.
Young people were involved in putting the programme together and wouldalso be involved in delivering the course itself, he added. Young peopleare asked questions including what they would want to see from aprotocol and who they would most want to talk with.
