Health News: Self-Harm - Greater tendency in girls to self-harm

Young girls are four times as likely as young boys to self-harm, according to the Royal College of Nursing.

Its new research says girls are twice as likely as boys to overdose on paracetomol and three times as likely to be victims of bullying. Alcohol intoxication was the most common reason for young people going to A&E.

The research was based on 164 boys and girls aged 10 to 15 who attended two general hospitals on the east London/Essex border.

The findings come as the Mental Health Foundation and the Camelot Foundation launch a UK-wide inquiry into self-harm among 11- to 25-year-olds (News, 3-9 March).
