HEALTH NEWS: Mental Health - Inquiry to examine self-harm in UK

Self-harm in 11- to 25-year-olds will be the subject of a UK-wide inquiry, starting on 30 March.

The Mental Health Foundation and the Camelot Foundation will lead the work, which aims to raise awareness among young people, parents, carers and those who work in the health, education, social care and voluntary sectors.

It should lead to policy recommendations, training and practice guidelines for anyone working with young people who harm themselves.

A spokeswoman from the Mental Health Foundation said: "Rates of self-harm in the UK have increased over the past decade, which is the principal reason for the inquiry."

It is estimated that one in 10 young people self-harms and professionals only see a small number of these children.
