Health News: Scotland - Play areas may be no-smoking zones

The Scottish Executive is encouraging local authorities to extend its smoking ban from enclosed public spaces to outside areas used by children.

Smoking in places such as workplaces, pubs and restaurants will beillegal from 26 March. However, in an interview with Children inScotland magazine, First Minister Jack McConnell said the Executive wasalready encouraging local authorities to ban smoking in outdoor areasused by children, such as playgrounds and parks.

He said: "We have encouraged local authorities to consider the benefitsof introducing smoke-free policies in external areas where children andyoung people go. This will help to discourage them from being influencedby what they may see as an adult activity."
