Health News: Scotland - Focus on perinatal mental health

NHS Education for Scotland last week launched a framework for health professionals on improving teaching of mental health issues during pregnancy and the first year of a child's life.

The Perinatal Mental Health Curricular Framework should help peopledesigning courses to fill gaps on perinatal mental health work. A studyrevealed that many pre-registration courses for child and mental healthnurses did not include sessions on the mental health of new mothers orinfants.

Courses for health visitors sometimes only include a single one-hourlecture on the subject.

Research has found that suicide and psychiatric issues were the highestcauses of death among mothers. Also, children of mothers who suffereddepression in early motherhood are likely to develop it themselves.

Courses will be commissioned next year to meet the educational needslaid out in the guide.
