HEALTH NEWS: Scotland - Autism service to roll out nationwide

A family from a rural area of Scotland has been given a 300,000 grant to roll out its autism information service to the rest of the country.

Alison Leask, whose 19-year-old son has Asperger's syndrome, formed a group called Autism Argyll in 2000. She assembles two types of information packs - for families and social care workers - from a bedroom in her Campbeltown house.

The Scottish Executive grant is for three years, and while Leask will not be providing packs to people outside Argyll for some time, she hopes to make information available via the internet.

"At the time of diagnosis, which is a life-changing event, some parents get no information," said Leask. "It prevents a lot of parents from moving on."
