Health News: School nurses - Support workers to increase capacity

1 min read
School nurses are to have more time to focus on specialised work following the creation of a new type of practitioner able to carry out many of their tasks.

The news follows the completion of the School Workforce Rapid RolloutProgramme, a year-old scheme that straddled eight strategic healthauthorities across the north of England.

Run in conjunction with the Care Services Improvement Partnership, thescheme aimed to increase the capacity of the school healthworkforce.

This included helping to develop a role known as an assistantpractitioner, a high-level support position, within the workforce.

Richard Leigh, project manager at Cumbria & Lancashire Strategic HealthAuthority, which is hosting the scheme, said that the role acts as abridge between nursing staff and support workers, who are unable tocarry out higher-level tasks.

"It will help increase capacity for school nurses who can get on withaspects of their specialist role that only they can do, such as childprotection and targeted work with vulnerable children. We've had a lotof interest in this and it's been seen as a whole new concept."
