Health News: Public health - DH sets up team to advise councils

The Department of Health has funded a new team of advisers to help local government play a greater role in public health.

The Healthy Communities Programme will work with local government andthe voluntary sector to tackle health inequalities and increase workaround healthy lifestyles.

The initiative, managed by the Improvement and Development Agency, ispart of the Government drive to integrate health and social careservices outlined in the health white paper Our Health, Our Care, OurSay.

Focusing particularly on supporting leadership roles, the programme willrun until 2008 and work closely with the 70 local authorities and 18primary care trusts with the greatest public health problems.

Sue Johnson, joint head of the programme, said the team would work withcouncillors, jointly appointed directors of public health, adult socialcare leads and children's services directors.
