Health News: Premature babies - Care cuts cerebral palsy numbers

Improved standards of neonatal care have helped to cut the numbers of premature babies with cerebral palsy, according to researchers.

Researchers from the University of Liverpool, writing in The Lancet, pooled data from 16 European centres over the course of 16 years. Theyfound that the number of cases fell significantly during the period from60.6 per 1,000 live births in 1980 to 39.5 per 1,000 in 1996.

Lead researcher Dr Mary Jane Platt said that the drop in the prevalenceof the condition was likely to be the result of general improvements inneonatal care.
