The NHS in England: The operating framework for 2007/08, published inDecember, emphasised the importance of reducing the teenage conceptionrate and increasing screening for chlamydia over the next 12 months.
Although most women are pleased with the care they receive when theyhave a baby, the report said primary care trusts should provide "morechoice about the type of care and where they have their baby". It alsocalled for more progress to be made to halt the rise in childhoodobesity.
"Overarching all these targets is the priority for the financialframework of the NHS to be strengthened," said Jo Webber, deputy policydirector at the NHS Confederation.
"This is both a challenge to maintain services, but also an opportunityto look at how services can be made more effective."
