Health News: Mental Health - Minority ethnic groups' fund boost

Projects for young people from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds with mental health needs will benefit from 1.5m in funding.

The money, part of a 5m boost for young people with mental health problems, will be shared between five projects in Hillingdon, Camden and Brent in London, Rochdale, and Leicestershire.

Cathy Street, who jointly led research on charity YoungMinds' Minority Voices project, welcomed the funding as a "good start".

But she said there was also a need to address training for mental health workers, who often felt that they lacked the confidence and skills to work with young people from minority ethnic backgrounds.

The number of mental health workers from minority ethnic communities also needed to increase, she added.

The funding follows Delivering Race Equality, a blueprint that identified the need for further work with Black and minority ethnic children and young people.
