Health News: Health trusts - Children's services to be prioritised

Commissioning directors in new health trusts will be encouraged to prioritise children's services by using a self-assessment tool that was distributed to existing trusts last week.

The self-assessment tool, linked to a wider review of primary caretrusts effectiveness, asks trusts to prioritise child protection, children with disabilities and complex needs, transition services foradolescents and looked-after children.

They must also consider if they engage enough with other agencies andconduct monthly reviews of progress against the Every Child Mattersoutcomes.

The trusts are called on to produce evidence of an inter-agencycommissioning framework in line with children and young people's plansin order to track how much they spend on children's services.

Jane Appleby, lead for vulnerable children at Trent Strategic HealthAuthority, said that the Department of Health was keen to ensure trustshad easy-to-use guidance on children's services while trusts were intransition.
