The call follows the National Institute for Clinical Excellence's firstguidance on how healthcare professionals assess and manage children withfever, published last week.
Under the traffic light system, set out in the guidance, children'ssymptoms are graded into red, amber and green symptoms according torisk. High risk "red symptoms" - such as a very high temperature ormottled skin - should be urgently assessed by a healthcare professionaland be seen face-to-face within two hours or admitted to hospital.
Professor Mayur Lakhani, chair of the Royal College of GeneralPractitioners, said GPs needed more equipment, such as for carrying outX-rays and blood testing, to make sure children receive quick and localtreatment.
