Health news: Food Labelling - Voucher scheme must be consistent

A supermarket launching a voucher scheme to boost healthy eating and sport in schools needs to ensure the initiative is consistent with its labelling policy, a charity has warned.

Sainsbury's Active Kids campaign, launched last week, begins with a voucher collection scheme starting in March which will give customers one voucher per 10 spent in-store, plus an extra voucher for every 5 spent on fresh fruit and vegetables.

Schools will be able to redeem the vouchers to buy equipment that will enable them to provide activities outside the traditional sports curriculum, such as trampolines and space hoppers.

The initiative follows research by the supermarket that showed 57 per cent of children don't enjoy school games because they feel they perform poorly at them.

Neera Sharma, principal policy officer at Barnardo's, welcomed the move, pointing out supermarkets needed to be involved in changing families' eating habits.
