Health News: Disabled children - Trained dentists 'in shortsupply'

Many families struggle to find dentists who have been specially trained to treat disabled children, according to a new report.

The study by Contact a Family found that 32 per cent of families withdisabled children had problems finding a suitable dentist. This was dueto primary care trusts and NHS Direct giving out patchy information.

Jill Harrison, director of external affairs at the charity, said: "Wewould like all practices to become more accessible to disabled children- both physically and by ensuring all dentists have the skills to treatthem."

Janet Clarke, chair of the British Dental Association Central Committeefor Community and Public Health Dentistry, is backing calls by Contact aFamily to improve the flow of information about dental care for disabledchildren.

Both organisations would also like to see special care dentistry given ahigher status, and more funding for better initial and ongoing training.
