Health News: Children's fitness - Olympian supports PE taster sessions

Olympic rowing champion Sir Steve Redgrave is spearheading an attempt to boost primary school children's fitness levels by introducing them to sports and activity clubs.

Forty children at Watchetts School, Camberley, will have their activity levels measured over a set period of four months. Organisations including dance groups, the Brownies and Chelsea Football Club will give pupils taster sessions during PE lessons.

The government-endorsed scheme is run by Redgrave Health and Leisure, the company Sir Steve set up following his retirement from rowing.

Joanna Gay, leisure development officer at Surrey Heath Borough Council, which is supporting the scheme, said more than 40 organisations had agreed to be involved in the project.
