Health News: Childhood blindness - Moorfields to trial eyesight'cure'

A cure for inherited blindness in children is to be put to the test in a Department of Health-funded research project.

There are currently no treatments for the 500 UK adults and childrenwith inherited childhood blindness, a deterioration in vision caused bya gene that stops the retina from working.

The potential cure involves inserting normal copies of the gene into thecells of the retina. The trial, at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London,will be the first time it has been tested on children.

James Bainbridge, who leads the surgical team, said: " We expect thebest outcome in younger patients."
