Trial bids to tackle mental health challenges faced by children with epilepsy

A scheme is to be trialed in the South West of England to improve mental health support for children and young people with epilepsy.

More than three in four young people with epilepsy say the condition is having “a significant impact on their mental wellbeing, including their thoughts, feelings and how they cope with everyday life”, according to the charity Young Epilepsy, which is among organisations involved in the trial’s launch.

However, just a one in five paediatric epilepsy clinics offered mental health screening or support two years ago, according to a study by the charity.

Also involved in the pilot, which has been developed based on the views of young people through the charity's Youth Voice Network, is NHS England and its South Paediatric Neurosciences Operational Delivery Network.
