The research is based on almost 120,000 children born between 1983 and2001 who had been put on the child protection register of one county inSouth East England.
Lucy Thorpe, policy manager at the NSPCC, said: "Those working withchildren and families need to be aware of these associations becausefindings like this do have implications for preventive strategies thatcould be put in place."
But she added that further research was needed to work out what thestrategies would be.
