Health News: Alcohol abuse - Young people singled out in strategy

1 min read
The Government has singled out children and young people who abuse alcohol as a priority in its alcohol strategy for the first time.

Last week's strategy, Safe, Sensible and Social - Next Steps for theNational Alcohol Strategy, named under-18s as one of three groups whocause the most harm to themselves, their communities and their familiesby drinking alcohol.

In a bid to tackle drinking by under-18s, the Government said it intendsto develop guidance for young people and their parents as it "does not,as yet, have a clear and consistent age-based message on young peopleand alcohol". The strategy also pledges to continue the crackdown onthose who sell alcohol to young people through the use of test-purchaseschemes.

An independent review to examine the link between alcohol promotions, pricing and the harm caused by excess drinking is to be launched nextyear, alongside a marketing campaign to try and curb drinking byunder-18s.
