Health: London children could swim free

A quarter-of-a-million children living in five of London's most deprived boroughs will be able to swim free of charge during Easter under a new scheme led by mayor Ken Livingstone.

In the first stage, children under 16 living in Newham, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, Greenwich and Hackney will be eligible. If the Kids Swim Free scheme is successful, and more funding can be found, it could be rolled out across the capital during all school holidays.

The project is being funded by the mayor, the DfES, the DoH, and London 2012 - the company bidding to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games to the city.

Livingstone said Kids Swim Free would offer "educational, health, sporting and social benefits for young people living in deprived parts of London".
