Health: Deaf role model scheme to expand

1 min read Health
A project where deaf children have a chance to meet deaf adults to discuss their life experiences is widening its geographical reach.

The Deaf Role Model Project, run by The National Deaf Children's Society, will now be available to families in Berkshire, Cheshire, Lancashire, west Yorkshire and Wiltshire. It already operates in Oxfordshire, greater Manchester, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The project's expansion also means the adult role models will now visit local groups, the society's family weekends, schools, colleges and youth clubs, as well as visiting families in their homes as before.

Valerie Copenhagen, deaf role model co-ordinator at the society, said: "It's really building on the support network we already have, making it a more informal approach. One of the main benefits is the interaction. If you have a conversation with someone it comes across in an informal way and you can ask anything."
