2 mins read Social Care Youth Work
Knowing how to identify, and then offer help and support to children and young people who are victims of sexual abuse are important skills to have. Christopher Cloke explains what to look out for and how to ensure those who need help receive it.

Q: What is sexual abuse?

Sexual abuse is when a young person is being touched in a sexual way, or when something sexual is going on that they do not want to happen, which they did not choose to happen, or whenever something sexual is happening that they feel they cannot stop. An example would be when an adult or older person touches their private parts, or someone their own age touches their private parts without the young person being able to completely agree to it.

The law states that it is illegal for an adult to have any kind of sexual relationship with a child or young person under the age of 16, or 17 in Northern Ireland.
