The criticism comes after the NSPCC revealed more than 20,000 incidents of sex offences against children were recorded by police in England and Wales last year.
Figures obtained through the Freedom of Information Act also reveal nearly 5,000 of the victims were ten or younger. The number of offences recorded against girls was six times higher than the number against boys.
The NSPCC has criticised the Home Office for mixing adult and children's statistics in its annual crime report and is now calling for the government to publish clearer data to allow for the development of victim support and prevention at a local level.
