Guidance on the Employment of Children

The government has issued new guidelines on the number of hours children and young people should be legally permitted to work.

Will the introduction of the duty to participate in education and training change employment law for under-18s? From 2013, all 16-year-olds and, from 2015, all 17-year-olds in England who have not achieved a Level 3 qualification will be required to take part in some form of education or training. However, those who want to work will still be able to as long as they combine this with either part-time education, work-based training or part-time training outside their workplace. Under the Education and Skills Act 2008, their employers are obliged to give them time off work to enable them to do so.
