What's it all about? The government is reviewing its guidelines on school exclusions in England in an attempt to cut the number of cases where pupils are removed from school. Ministers also want to reduce the proportion of excluded children who have special educational needs (SEN). Instead of excluding pupils, the government wants schools to work harder to tackle challenging behaviour at an earlier stage and promote good behaviour among all pupils.
Another aim of the review is to simplify the appeals process for parents who disagree with a decision to exclude their child. The wording of the updated guidance will also take into account academy and free school status.
