GP-style practices must be accountable

1 min read Social Care
The Local Government Association has called for clarity on who will be held accountable for the activities of the new social work practices.

Les Lawrence, chair of the children and young people board at the association, said pilots of social work practices, modelled on GPs' surgeries, need to help establish clear lines of responsibility. "There are some real problems in terms of accountability," he said. "We need to be able to ensure we, as corporate parents, are clear about accountability and know who is responsible for what."

Lawrence said that good accountability needs to be maintained to ensure authorities know how children in their care are doing.

Speaking at the CareandHealth conference, Giving Children the Continuity of Care They Deserve, Lawrence said one of the main findings of the inquiry into Victoria Climbie's death was a lack of accountability. "Someone has to be in ultimate charge," he said. "Any pilot has to explore where accountability is established and providers held to account. The better the accountability, the better the outcomes for children."
