Improvised dance boosts children's physical health and overall wellbeing, helping to make being in hospital a more enjoyable experience.

Project

From Where You Are

Purpose

To use dance to boost the health and emotional wellbeing of children and young people in hospital

Funding

The project received £90,000 in funding over the past two years. The main sources of funding are the Arts Council England and Edgehill University's Research Excellence Framework Investment Fund, with other funding from Awards for All and in kind support from both the hospital and Edgehill.

Background

Being in hospital can be a stressful experience for children and young people recovering from major surgery or coping with complex, ongoing health problems. Since 2006, dance artist Lisa Dowler has worked with young patients at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool having been brought in as part of the hospital's Arts for Health scheme. Over the years, the Small Things Dance Collective - made up of co-artist directors Dowler and Cath Hawkins - has continued to use improvised somatic dance to boost children's physical health and overall wellbeing, helping make being in hospital a more enjoyable experience.
