Good Practice Guide on Paternity Testing Services

The Department of Health is seeking views on the proposed changes to the Code of Practice and Guidance on Paternity Testing Services 2001. The guidance applies across the UK, with some legal differences in Scotland that are highlighted by the guide.

The Good Practice Guide is aimed at organisations that provide, and advertise that they provide, genetic paternity-testing services directly to the public. The government has a responsibility to protect consumers and sets out a framework for protecting the welfare of those who are subjected to genetic paternity testing, especially children. The guide therefore sets out the standards expected of organisations that deliver these services to the public.

It will also likely be of interest to those who commission paternity testing services, as well as to general medical practitioners and any other clinicians whose advice may be sought by members of the public and organisations with an interest in this area.
