Good Idea: Prototype flat aids youth independence transition

YMCA scheme aims to offer homeless young people living in temporary accommodation an alternative affordable housing option that will give them the stability needed to get on their feet.

Provider: YMCA London South West

Name: Y:Cube

A new bright red box-shaped building stood in front of YMCA Wimbledon has been spiking the interest of passers-by since it was placed there this year.

Called the Y:Cube, the self-contained one-bedroom flat is the prototype of a new flatpack housing concept by YMCA London South West designed to help young residents move into affordable rented accommodation.

Developed in partnership with Roger Stirk Harbour + Partners and Insulshell, the model is designed to be an alternative to shared accommodation for single people living in temporary housing.

"Three years ago, when I was getting sick and tired at the lack of choice for residents moving on from the YMCA, I challenged myself and thought there must be another way," explains Andy Redfearn, director of housing and development at YMCA London South West.
