Name Children’s Republic of Shoreditch

Summary A group of eight- to 13-year-olds have set up an independent state in an “embassy” building in Hackney in the culmination of a year-long creative education project

On 4 July an independent state was founded – the Children’s Republic of Shoreditch. Overseen by charity the Ministry of Stories, the republic is the result of a year of planning, which has involved children designing their embassy building and planning their state’s laws and customs.

Open to the public for two months, the republic will offer the chance to apply for citizenship after rigorous immigration control and fingerprinting. The citizenship test includes questions such as “what is your favourite hobby?” and if the test is passed it will result in the receipt of a passport.
