Good Idea: Award will recognise schools' commitment to democracy

2 mins read Education Citizenship Participation
A recently launched awards scheme aims to showcase the work of secondary schools and colleges that encourage pupils to engage in the democratic process.

Name: Discovering Democracy Awards

Provider: The British Youth Council

In light of the Trojan Horse scandal in early 2014, policymakers have sought to boost the amount of time schools spend on teaching children and young people about the role of democracy in British society and the importance of ensuring they participate in it.

Launched last month, the Discovering Democracy Awards scheme is a partnership between the Cabinet Office, Department for Education and British Youth Council (BYC). It aims to encourage education settings to engage young people - in particular those aged 16 and over - in the values of democracy, while also looking to support the development of a strong grounding in core academic subjects as well as good character traits.
