The Morgan Inquiry into Young Adult Volunteering in the UK, which published its report this week, said volunteering should be seen as a route to work for unemployed young adults because employers place high value on the skills young people can gain through volunteering.
It also said employers should provide a flexible day off to encourage volunteering, and called for an industry standard award scheme to recognise the skills workers gained through volunteering.
The inquiry was led by Labour peer Baroness Sally Morgan with a cross-party panel of MPs and other experts taking part. Morgan said that, despite a positive press, there are often barriers to becoming involved in volunteering.
