Girls most likely to be restrained

1 min read
Girls in the youth justice system are more likely to be restrained than boys, according to figures gathered by a prison reform charity.

The Howard League for Penal Reform examined Freedom of Information figures on how often res-traint was used on young people across the juvenile secure estate from April 2007 to June this year.

The statistics, seen exclusively by CYP Now, suggest that while girls make up just seven per cent of the youth prison population, 20 per cent of all restraints in that period were carried out on them. The figures showed 2,009 separate incidents of girls being restrained, compared with 8,125 boys, who make up 93 per cent of young prisoners.

The figures showed that Foston Hall Young Off-ender Institution, near Derby, which can hold up to 16 girls, restrained the most girls, with 73 incidents during the time period.
