The Scarman Trust and the Handsworth Recreation Group have received 271,000 and 99,000 respectively to run projects in the Soho and East Handsworth wards of the city during the next two years.
In Soho, the Scarman Trust will work with young people aged 11 to 25, with a particular emphasis on 13- to 19-year-olds. It will target a core group of 40 individuals who are involved in gang culture or are at risk of involvement in gangs.
The aim will be to build trust and achieve a minimum of five hours' contact a week with each young person for at least six months. A network of community organisations will refer people to the project and provide additional services. The project will also try to involve parents.
