Youth workers sit in a group set up as part of Operation Ventara - West Midlands Police's response to a rise in gun crime.
Rob Phelps, youth officer for Ladywood and Perry Bar, which includes Handsworth and Aston where many shootings have taken place, said: "The police are positive about the youth service being involved. It's important we get to these young people early and show them other things they can do. The most successful way is through detached youth work."
Superintendent Peter O'Neill, in charge of the operation, told Young People Now the group would look to target children "as young as 10" thought to be at risk of joining gangs.
