Gambling: Manchester responds to fears over super-casino

The unit will be funded by the operator of the new casino and will co-ordinate counselling and support services for problem gamblers.

Manchester Withington MP John Leech, whose constituency will contain the super-casino, said: "I'm not overly concerned about the suggestion that young people will get the chance to gamble, because I think that can be dealt with through a normal legal process that says under-18s are not allowed in.

"But I remain to be convinced that a super-casino is the correct vehicle for regeneration. There's the chance that it will lead to extra addiction in the area and further social deprivation within some families, which will have a knock-on effect on young people."
