What happened? More than 1,000 Year 11 pupils attending Bolton's schools and academies were invited to think about life after school at a Futures4me event held this month. Along with parents and carers, the students learned about the courses and training opportunities that Bolton's colleges, sixth forms and work-based learning providers have to offer.

Who was there? Local employers and members of the uniformed services were on hand in Bolton's town hall to provide information and advice about routes into their respective professions. Connexions personal advisers were also there to provide careers information and advice to those who are unsure about which route to take. Representatives also showed pupils how to use the new online course application system at www.mycoursemyfuture.com/bolton.

How did it go? A pupil from Bolton's Canon Slade school found the event useful, saying: "It has given me lots of ideas and helped to point me in the right direction for the future." Councillor Ebrahim Adia, executive member for children's services, says the annual event is essential: "It is so important for young people to be aware of their options, and it is good to hear that so many people benefited from the advice."
