Funding Watch: Who's getting money and who's giving it - ElectoralCommission cash encourages voting

The Electoral Commission is offering grants of up to 300,000 for projects that encourage teenagers outside of education to get more involved in the democratic process. School leavers who have not gone on to further education are one of three groups that the commission wants to target.

People from ethnic minorities and people with disabilities are the othertwo groups.

It is looking for organisations that can work in a number of localitiesto apply for the grants, which replace a previous scheme called the NewInitiatives Fund that was more locally focused, had a broader remit andawarded smaller sums of about 18,000.

These latest grants have been made available for the next three years, but details of how much money in total will be available over thatperiod have not yet been finalised.

A commission spokeswoman said: "What we have done for these grants isnarrowed the groups we want to target down to those we feel are theleast likely to register to vote and be part of the democraticprocess."
