The loss of the money follows new rules introduced by the government back in May that meant Sure Start money could only back local authority-run early years schemes.
Although the council promised to help find a way for the club to pay its rent, the centre decided to close after an emergency management meeting. Former deputy manager Mandy Dawson said: "We feel we have been really let down by both of them."
Labour councillor John Warmisham, Salford's lead member for children's services, said the council was surprised at the club's decision to close.
"We were in talks with the managers and were due to meet with them this month to advise on what other sources of funding might be available," he said. "Under new government rules, the Sure Start local programme is no longer permitted to fund childcare.
