Funding: Council allocates extra funds for girls in Brixton

Councillors have earmarked 10,000 to implement recommendations that include new programmes in dance, art and fashion, longer opening times and more internet access.

An inspection team of youth council members, aged 14 to 21, toured adventure playgrounds, youth clubs and projects in Brixton after they were commissioned by Lambeth Children and Young People's Services to make an independent assessment of the facilities available to young people.

One of their main recommendations was for more activities for female users. A spokesman for the council said: "Young women do use the centres, but young men use them more. The youth council wanted more activities specifically focused on the interests of young women."
