Social workers have called for an end to the management-dominated culture in the profession, urging policy makers to encourage more innovative practice from the frontline.

At the launch of the Midlands regional Social Work Action Network,around 50 social workers, students and lecturers gathered to discuss the"crisis" in social work.

Children's social worker Simon Cardy said: "What we need now are newstructures and organisations that can communicate and exchange ideasfreely and independently between academics, practitioners, and serviceusers."
