Freedom to Live: Livability's Report on Disabled Young People Moving Towards Adulthood

2 mins read Social Care
Major reform is needed to help disabled young people move to adult services. A report by disability charity Livability found widespread failings in terms of education, work, housing and social opportunities.

Involving a survey of 500 disabled young people, as well as more detailed interviews with 30 others, the report found some were being offered services intended for the retired in the worst cases. Others were unable to leave their parental home and some wheelchair users were offered housing with poor access. Those surveyed also reported being denied work experience, training or college places because they were deemed to be a health and safety risk.

Livability estimates around four out of 10 disabled young people are inappropriately housed and that disabled 18- and 19-year-olds are three times as likely to be unemployed as young people of the same age without disabilities. It also highlighted a lack of advocacy services to help disabled young people as another major problem for them.
