Free childcare: Service chiefs told to back extension despiteconcerns

1 min read
Beverley Hughes has called on children's services chiefs to back the Government's plans to extend free nursery provision for three- and four-year-olds.

The children's minister has written to all directors of children'sservices amid mounting concern from nurseries about moves to extend thefree early years entitlement to 15 hours a week in 2010. Many nurseriesbelieve that the 3bn a year plan will fail if the Government doesnot increase the funding or allow nurseries to charge parents top-upfees.

Hughes wrote: "Many of you will have received representations and I knowthat some early years staff in local authorities are also concernedabout funding levels ... I would encourage you to reassure yourself thatthe funding distribution at the local level is satisfactory and properlyreflects the amount the Government has provided for early years settingsand distributed across all sectors."
