Fostering: Shortage of carers affects teenagers

The network's latest survey of local authorities highlighted a need for a further 8,200 foster carers in England - a 35 per cent increase on the figure of 6,100 revealed in its last survey two years ago.

The organisation does not have a figure for the number of carers needed for teenagers, but identifies it as the age group most in need.

A spokeswoman for the Fostering Network said: "Taking on teenagers is generally acknowledged as quite challenging."

The network is pressing the Government to help attract more carers by introducing a system of national minimum fostering allowances and extra funding for local authorities.
