Former DCS to manage quango cuts

An influential former director of children's services (DCS) has been tasked with overseeing the abolition of quangos within the Department for Education (DfE).

David Hawker, previously DCS at Westminster and the former director-general of education in Wales, will take charge of managing changes once a final decision is made on which bodies should go.

His work relates to 17 non-departmental public bodies (NDPBs) attached to the DfE including Cafcass, the Office of the Children's Commissioner and the Children's Workforce Development Council.

CYP Now has learned the department is aiming to reduce staff numbers in NDPBs from 8,000 to 5,500 over the three-year spending review period, although the DfE was unable to confirm this. Hawker told CYP Now that the plans for quangos are yet to be finalised, but confirmed a number will take on different forms.
